During my tire testing I have found that tire width is perportional to grip and racing style. I myself like the slide technique so having front tires a little less grippier than the rears works well for me. If you put the same all the way around you get excellent cornering at the risk of unloading the wieght on the rears thus spinning out the rear end.
This information is from testing on completely smooth surfaces so for carpet I have no knowledge.
